Matthew 12:9-14

Episode Summary

What happens when our rules about following God actually get in the way of following Him? In this episode of The Overflow Podcast, we continue our study through Matthew 12, focusing on verses 9–14. Jesus enters the synagogue and encounters a man with a withered hand. The Pharisees see an opportunity to accuse Him. Jesus sees a person worth stopping for. Their question is simple: Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath? Jesus’ response exposes something much deeper about the heart of God, the purpose of the Sabbath, and the danger of allowing religious rules to become more important than mercy, obedience, and people. We talk about how easily believers can create extra rules around what following Jesus is “supposed” to look like, even when those rules began with good intentions. What happens when our routines become laws? When protecting our idea of faithfulness keeps us from responding to the person God has placed directly in front of us? We also share stories of God’s activity at New River, including conversations about discerning the voice of the Holy Spirit, responding when you feel prompted by God, the power of prayer, and what happens when our public worship becomes the overflow of private time spent with Jesus. In this episode: • Matthew 12:9–14 and Jesus healing on the Sabbath • Why the Pharisees were angry with Jesus • The danger of legalism and man-made religious rules • What Jesus teaches us about mercy and doing good • Why people matter more than protecting our systems • How to discern the leading of the Holy Spirit • Learning to recognize and respond to God’s voice • Why prayer and time with God produce spiritual fruit • The difference between performing Christianity and living from an overflow • Keeping open hands with God instead of building our own rules • Remembering that God still sees and cares for the one Jesus reminds us that it is lawful to do good. Following Him isn't about building increasingly complicated systems around our faith. It's about knowing Him, listening to Him, and being willing to respond when He calls.
