In Matthew 13, Jesus begins teaching in parables, starting with one of His most familiar: the Parable of the Sower, also known as the Parable of the Four Soils. But this story is about far more than seeds and soil. It is a picture of the human heart. In this episode of The Overflow Podcast, we walk through Matthew 13:1–23 and look at the four different responses to the Word of God: the hardened path, the rocky ground, the soil crowded by thorns, and the good soil that receives the Word and bears fruit. What causes a heart to become hard? What happens when faith has no deep roots? What are the cares, distractions, and desires of this world that can slowly choke out the Word? And what does it look like to have a heart that is ready to hear, receive, and respond to Jesus? We also explore why Jesus taught in parables, what He meant when He said, “He who has ears, let him hear,” and the beautiful invitation found within His warning. We cannot control the condition of another person’s heart, but we can faithfully sow the seed, examine our own hearts, and continually return to the Lord. Before diving into Matthew 13, the team also reflects on a powerful weekend at New River, sharing takeaways about marriage, worship, the presence of God, surrender, and the simplicity and power of Jesus. Where is your heart today? Is it hard, shallow, crowded, or fruitful? Join us as we study Matthew 13 and ask the Lord to give us ears to hear and hearts ready to receive His Word.
